What Are Terpenes?

By now, you’ve likely heard of CBD, and even THC...but what about terpenes?

Terpenes are botanical compounds that help give certain plants their distinctive aromas. Research shows that these compounds can also have therapeutic benefits. Terpenes may be commonly associated with cannabis, but they actually exist in every living plant.

Here’s an example – have you ever used lavender to unwind and relax? What about grapefruit or lemon to energize? The same goes for Cannabis strains. Sativas will pick you up for energetic daytime activities, while indicas will put you in the couch when you want to relax and wind down at the end of the day.

That is due to terpenes. Plant essential oils and terpenes—airborne plant compounds—play a central role in nature’s positive impact on human health.

Terpenes can be found both in cannabis plants (adding to the “feeling” you get from each unique strain) as well as everyday botanicals like rosemary, basil and lemongrass. Once isolated, there is essentially no difference between terpenes pulled from cannabis compared with those pulled from other plants.

When infused with CBD botanical terpenes create a synergistic effect, known as the “entourage effect.” Each terpene is responsible for contributing to a specific quality to the experience such as pain management, anxiety reduction, energy enhancement, sleep enhancer, etc.

Some of the most common terpenes are as follows:
